Sedation in pediatric dentistry – why, when and how

Fear of dentists, dental work and pain is most common problem in contemporary dentistry. In the past decades, dentistry has evolved into a profession where pain has to be avoided at any means. Dentophobia is shown in up to 80% of the general population.
Different methods of anesthetic application are helpful but the patients, especially at young age, are still aware that dental work is unpleasant and tend to avoid dental appointments.
Modern age requires modern solutions so the progress in contemporary dentistry has delivered different methods of working with our patients in order to relax them and conduct the necessary work.
Sedation is well known method of relaxation of the patients and it is safe when applied properly. According to the EAPD and ADA, ASA 1 and 2 patients may safely undergo the sedation while the dental rehabilitation is conducted.
At the Clinic for pediatric and preventive dentistry in Belgrade, sedation is performed as a per oral and as a inhalation. Medication that we use is midazolam for per oral sedation and nitrous oxide for inhalation sedation.
Midazolam is used according to the patients weight where certain amount of the medication is given to the patient in different ways per oral while nitrous oxide using the inhalation apparatus in different percentage according to the state of the patient while being sedated.
The goal of the sedation is to relax the patient in order to accept the necessary intervention and to be able to do the intervention in a safe way. The idea of the sedation at young age is to gradually eliminate the need for the sedation in the future work and help the patient overcome their fear of dentists and dental intervention.
