Oral Region, New Vision: Shedding Light on the Consequences of Cancer Immunotherapy in the oral mucosa

Oral immune-related adverse events (irAEs) are a growing clinical concern in oncologic patients receiving immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs)-targeted immune therapy. These adverse events can manifest across a spectrum of oral conditions, including mucositis, xerostomia, and autoimmune-related ulcerations or bullous lesions, with potential to significantly impact patient morbidity and treatment outcomes. Despite their clinical relevance, oral irAEs remain underrecognized, with limited standardized guidelines for management. This presentation will examine the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying oral irAEs, focusing on the immune-mediated alterations of the oral mucosa and associated tissues. We will discuss the latest advances in diagnosis, risk factors, and the evidence supporting various therapeutic approaches. Emphasis will be placed on early detection and multidisciplinary management strategies, integrating dental and medical care to optimize patient outcomes. By reviewing current literature and clinical cases, this session aims to provide healthcare professionals with a comprehensive understanding of oral irAEs and actionable strategies for their effective management.
