PREVENTION AND MANAGEMENT OF BLEEDING IN THE DENTAL OFFICE
Bleeding during and/or after a dentoalveolar procedure is a major concern for clinicians. If not addressed, this bleeding can lead to the patient's death. The estimated risk of hemorrhage related to third molar extraction ranges from 0.2% to 1.4%.
Bleeding during surgery may arise from both local and systemic factors. Local factors encompass normal anatomical structures and pathological lesions. Systemic factors include hereditary coagulopathies (Von Willebrand disease, Hemophilia A and B) , platelet defects and certain medications. Many medications and herbal medications have anticoagulant properties. The antithrombotic medications are therapeutically necessary and are part of a treatment regiment for medical conditions and especially for cardiovascular disease.
This presentation will emphasize not only how to prevent but also how to manage perioperative bleeding in dentoalveolar surgery.
