AI and Orthodontics: Assistant or Risk?
Artificial intelligence is increasingly being incorporated into orthodontic software, imaging technologies, and routine clinical workflows, transforming both diagnostic and administrative aspects of practice. Applications such as automated image analysis, clinical decision-support tools, and AI-assisted patient communication offer clear opportunities to improve efficiency and streamline care delivery. At the same time, their use raises important clinical, operational, ethical, and legal considerations when implementation occurs without appropriate oversight. This lecture will explore the current integration of artificial intelligence in orthodontic practice, with emphasis on distinguishing meaningful clinical utility from potential limitations and risks. Particular attention will be given to large language models and their emerging role in chairside information retrieval, clinical documentation, and communication with patients. A practical framework for the responsible adoption of AI in orthodontics will be presented, highlighting the need to preserve clinical judgment, professional accountability, and patient trust while leveraging the benefits of these evolving technologies.
