Guided bone regeneration - The impact of biomaterials on bone regenerative outcome
Guided bone regeneration (GBR) is often required to obtain sufficient bone quantity during dental implantation. Key factors for GBR include cells, a scaffold, mechanical stability, signalling molecules and blood supply. Barrier membranes and bone substitute materials are essential components of GBR treatment. Bone substitute materials with different origin and composition can be utilized. Different local factors and systemic conditions are related to the outcome of GBR treatment.
In this lecture, the foundation of theoretical knowledge of GBR will be explained. Application of grafting materials through various examples from clinical practice will be presented.

    Learning objectives:
To understand the biological background of osseous formation and factors that can influence it.
To see examples of clinical application of different grafting materials in alveolar bone reconstruction as part of implant therapy.
